Los Angeles California artist Awol One, some may call him a crude poet, a drunken rambler or a melodic voice for humans but nobody can deny that he’s maintained an uncompromising level of intelligence, honesty, dark humor and originality.Touring as a solo act and a member of The Shape Shifters , Awol has musically collaborated with everyone from Xzibit and BReal of Cypress Hill to Aesop Rock, KRS-One and Kool Keith. He has also opened for Atmosphere, Dilated Peoples and Emenem just to name a few.
In the early 2000s when journalists didn’t quite know what to make of strange alternative indie hip hop, Spin magazine tried to pin him down as one of the premiere voices of emo-rap, while Vice Magazine, URB and LA Weekly were singing the praises of his anthems. His 2001 collaboration with Daddy Kev, “Souldoubt”, quickly became seen as a L.A. underground hip hop world wide classic, and since Awolrus hasn’t slowed down a bit.
Awol’s new album is titled Primer. Released on Alpha Pup Records.
Its studio mastered by long time collaborator Daddy Kev. Its an uptempo gritty album that captures the current state of the world. But yet…still fun enough to get people moving!
The group was founded in 2013 when Progeny and Evolve met while touring Texas. Later, during a tour stop in Seattle, Progeny met Bassist Rob Castro. The trio put their first recording together by contributing their individual parts from separate locations, Progeny from San Antonio, Evolve from Donna, TX and Rob from Seattle, WA.
