Canary Room, monica
Babytooth is the Portland, OR-based songwriting project of singer/guitarist Isabel Zacharias. The accompanying guitar leads of Annie Fifter (Yellow Room) are sometimes crunchy, sometimes clean, with Hugh Jepson (Soft Cheese, Moon Shy) behind the drums and Clayton Collins splitting time between the bass & the Casiotone. Somewhere between early aughts-inspired indie rock and lyric-driven folk, the songs explore awareness and distraction, aging and loss, comic relief, the everyday, and how memory informs identity.
The musical endeavor known as ‘monica’ is a melancholy dream of an electric guitar and dusty amplifier. monica, most commonly based out of Astoria, OR, tiptoes between indie rock, asymmetrical pop, and experimental folk based on the band’s ever rotating lineup and mood of songwriter, Caitlyn Faircloth. As a solo act, Caitlyn uses her freedom of structure to experiment with her songs, sometimes landing in traditional folk waters, while other instances letting her songs flow into repetitive, sleepy loops. Whatever form the project takes, the lyrics lead listeners into an internal dialogue, both nostalgic and wandering, awake and asleep.
