Part Pop-Punk, part Dream-Pop, Counterfeit Kubrick is the indie solo project from Portland-based musician Ethan Conrad. Ethan played guitar in Portland metal bands Queen Chief and SAOLA but yearned to create music that was less on the heavy side of the musical spectrum. Enter Counterfeit Kubrick, the half-serious, half-baked ramblings of a disillusioned youth. Counterfeit Kubrick’s debut album, Look Both Ways was released in spring 2020, with a large part of the writing and recording process taking place in his bedroom during a global pandemic and local quarantine, and Conrad wrote, performed, recorded, and produced every aspect of Look Both Ways, other than a guest vocal feature from fellow SAOLA guitarist, Mia Pinzelik on ‘New Dawn’. Look Both Ways was largely inspired by Ethan’s favorite indie rock bands such as Modern Baseball, Sorority Noise, Jets to Brazil, M83, and Beach House with twists and hints of his metal background intertwined into a lush soundscape of dreamy-pop-punk.
